The Purpose of Freedom in Christ

Sunday’s sermon, (audio) “Saved for Holiness,” June 7, 2015

Sermon text: Romans 8:1-4

Series: Romans – The Call of the Gospel / Mini-series on Romans 8 – If God is For Us… Romans 8:1-4 (Part 2) “Saved for Holiness”

Main Idea:

Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit and by the work of Jesus Christ, God the Father delivered his children from condemnation so that filled with the Spirit, we will walk in holiness.

1. Everyone is on one of two paths (righteousness or destruction) and under the influence of one of two dispositions (Spirit or sinful nature/flesh).

2. Jesus condemned sin in the flesh by (a.) taking sin’s penalty, death; (b.) breaking sin’s power, disobedience (by his obedience & resurrection); and (c.) short-circuiting sin’s purpose, guilt and shame.

3. God saved us so that he could conform us into the image of Jesus, so, yes, he does expect us and empowers us to obey.

See Ephesians 2:8-101 Thess. 4:3a; & Colossians 3.
